Current School News

Richman 5th Grade Ship Constructions Open House at Newport Nautical Museum. The fifth grade students at Richman Elementary School, Fullerton School District set off on an exploration this Spring to learn about early explorers and their navigations into the New World. Their project based learning experience involved mathematical problem solving, writing and composition, understandings in Social Sciences, art, science, and technology. The fifth grade teachers empowered students to experience how Portuguese and Spanish explorers improved navigation through technology. Using geometry, algebra, and mathematical reasoning students created small scale versions of different types of sails and ship constructs. They composed essays and compositions that described a variety of technologies that made the 1400 expeditions to the Americas possible (ie. Moving from square-shaped to triangular sails) The Newport Nautical Museum provided a rich context for students to learn about the lifestyles and culture at sea. We appreciate their generosity and professionalism in partnering with our students in teaching and learning. A special thanks to Suzanne Lockhart, who made it all possible.

Richman School Night at the Public Library is Wednesday, March 2, 2005. It will be held at the Main Branch on Commonwealth Ave. Last year, in spite of the pouring rain, parents and children enjoyed their time getting acquainted with library services, working on science projects, and enjoying refreshments. This year a special feature will be added to Richman Night. Author Marianne Wallace will be on hand for parents and students to meet and to answer questions.

Richman Students are #1. Mrs. Sambrano (2nd grade) and David share some time together making sure that students are learning, and that they are given the opportunity to show what they know. When visiting Richman, take a moment to ask our students these four important questions?

  1. What are you learning?
  2. What activity are you doing to learn this standard?
  3. What will you do to show that you have learned this standard?
  4. How will you know if you did a good job?

Whew, Richman Does it Again - In the final game of the After School Soccer League, Richman wins over Raymond. Outstanding scoring and defense were seen on both ends of the soccer field. Raymond held the field and gave Richman a challenge. However, the Racers offensive and defensive teams pulled out another victory in this final match. Congratulations on your outstanding victory. We are very proud of you.

Raymond and Richman School's mascots at the beginning of the game give each other a "high-five" as a sign of good clean competition.

Jesse was the lead scorer in the game with two goals. However, over the five games played, Jesse scored 14 goals.

California Content Standards in the Classroom

Students in the fifth grade are working on Characterization in their Language Arts classes. One of the key California Standards of focus is "contrasting the actions and motives of a character in a work of fiction." The fifth grade teachers have worked hours planning instruction and student activities to help children master fifth grade content standards.
