Missions of California

California is blessed with a series of missions built many years ago. More information about the missions can be found here.

Mission San Antonio de Padua (picture and caption by Amy Kim, Grade 4, Sunset Lane School) was founded on July 14, 1771. It was founded by Father Junipero Serra. The location of this mission is five miles northwest of the community of Jolon in Monterey County. This mission also raised beautiful golden colored horses called Palominos. It was the third mission founded.

Mission San Buenaventura (picture and caption by Katherine Kim, Grade 4, Sunset Lane School) was founded in 1782 by Father Serra. It is located in Ventura, California. San Buenaventura was the ninth and last mission founded by the famous Father Serra.

Mission Santa Clara de Asis (picture and caption by Frances Lee, Grade 4, Sunset Lane School) is located southeast of San Francisco. It was founded as a Franciscan mission in 1777.

Mission San Rafael Arcangel (picture and caption by Alexander Park, Grade 4, Sunset Lane School) was founded in 1817 under the direction of Father Vicente de Sarria. It is 15 miles north of San Francisco in San Rafael. The fog and dampness of San Francisco caused illness to the indians at Mission Dolores. Mission San Rafael Arcangel was the twentieth mission.

Mission San Luis Rey (picture by Christina Ladera, Grade 4, Sunset Lane School) was founded on June 13, 1797. It was named for Louis IX, King of France. It is close to San Juan Capistrano. It is nicknamed the "King of the Missions" and is the 18th of 21 missions.
